I rented a car yesterday, sort of. It involved 2 bike rides, an Uber, several phone calls, the run around, and exhaustion. I wrote it up on Oppo on M edium where you can post pictures without having to provide a kidney. If you’d like posting access there, let me know.

As much as Kinja frustrates me, there’s no way I’m trading it for Medium. The best comment section I’ve seen on an article there is absolutely nothing compared to a good Kinja discussion.

Medium’s comment section isn’t designed for a community like this. Medium’s thing is  “ every comment is its own story” and that gets weird real quick.

Wow, that’s awful.

When ever we’ve had a hire car here in the U.K., they’ve either picked us up from where ever we were to take us to the hire place or they delivered the car to us. The only issue was what cars they gave us.

When this one, went in for repairs,

Kinja'd!!!

Enterprise gave us a Hyundai i30 (supposed to be ‘like for like’, could of been worse, they were going to give us a Jeep Renegade, thankfully two American couples were in need of a car and they took it).

Kinja'd!!!

Another time the repair shop gave us this, Ford KA+

Kinja'd!!!

Then when the car needed a service, Skoda gave us a Fabia.

Kinja'd!!!

Recently while this one, was in for some repair,

Kinja'd!!!

the garage gave us this, Vauxhall Corsa E.

Kinja'd!!!

So for one of the largest cars before getting into SUVs, etc... we keep getting some of the smallest on the market, ‘like for like’ be damned.

yeah like for like pretty much will never happen unless you’re wealthy, continuing the examples I know many people with GT86s that when they took their cars in for the recall they got an aygo or a yaris as a courtesy car, definitely not like for like

The woman that gave us the i30 said, ‘we’ve upgraded you to this!’. I said, ‘upgraded, it’s supposed to be like for like. Ours is a Superb’. She said, ‘is that bigger?’. I replied, yes, a lot bigger. The car needs to be able to take my step-father’s and mother’s wheelchairs in the boot’. She said, ‘we were going to give you the Renegade. You can put the rear seats down in this!’. To my final reply, ‘and if I take my mum and step-father out, where does the other person sit if the rear seats are down!?’.

You got to laugh.

I still cleaned the car and removed some scratches and over spray when we sent it back.

I once rented a “sports car” from sixt and got “upgraded” to a Peugeot 308. Ugh.

What, they didn’t give you a 270bhp 308 GTi,

Kinja'd!!!

Or a 493bhp 308 R?

Kinja'd!!!

That's terrible. You should of left.

You can post images on here just fine, you just need to click on the little text bar below the image, and put whatever info in the boxes as long as it is something, hit apply to all to save some time.

Rental companies always categorize their cars one size down from what they actually are - subcompacts become “compact, Ford Fiesta or similar” , compacts become “midsize, Chevrolet Cruze or similar” , midsize becomes “full size, Chevrolet Malibu or similar” , and full size is listed as “premium” . WTF, “premium” is a price and perceptual market positioning, not a size!

It's so annoying.

The thing with when they gave us the Hyundai i30, they had a Vauxhall Insignia exec on the forecourt. Grrr.

That’s awful.

But when they say “Next time, don’t book using a 3rd party service”

They mean it.

I had a similar experience when booking a hotel through a 3rd party site

Going to that company’s site is the best way to make sure the booking is real. E ven if the 3rd party is “reputable”, you’re still greatly increasing the chances of some screwup.

These days I just use 3rd party sites just to find deals, but then book on the car rental, hotel or whatever is the direct site for the company I’m booking something with.

Far lower chance of screwups.

hehehe I knew someone in Europe would show off a bunch of cool cars we don’t get :p

Mexico gets the KA+ under the name Figo. They should sell it up here

hey, at least you didn’t get a Versa!

Speaking of rentals, and Sixt, my last rental in Germany (I know I have shown it before, but it is relevant to your DD):

I had an active rental from Enterprise at the time everything shut down. Could’ve told this story six months ago, except I walked 6 miles home af ter dropping it off rather than take an Uber.

Their neighborhood locations (and affiliated employees)  have not fared well during COVID. Airport locations are same as always.

Cool cars.

The KA+ certainly isn't cool.

Ye’, that’s what Ford did. They look the Figo which was made for the Americas and Asia, and for some reason they wanted a car below the Fiesta, even though the Figo/KA+ is basically an updated Fiesta Mk5. Ford are getting rid of the KA+ in Europe soon, even though they updated it in line with others into the ‘Active’ range.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Which they’ve further expanded into the van side.

It was the base diesel engine and make fuckall for horsepower. I needed the car so I just took it. I ended up getting 15 or 20% off or something. I had just worked 3 weeks straight - no weekends - 12 hours+ per day. I was like: give me a fucking car and let me go drive to where there’s no cell service.

If I could have gotten the same rate through Enterprise’s website, I would have. That’s the problem with all these jokers - the price isn’t the price. Car rental agencies are my list (along with UPS) of companies that can get swallowed by the ocean and I’d throw a party.

I wish someone would rent me an F-Type. In the US, I’ve never seen a rental agency have a performance car for reasonable money.

“ That’s the problem with all these jokers - the price isn’t the price”

Or the real problem sometimes  is the 3rd party is quoting a price for something that isn’t technically available.

Are you seriously defending rental car agencies?

They entered into contractual agreements with 3rd parties. They weren’t forced or coerced. They also weren’t forced to list compacts as midsizes or routinely pray on old or disabled people with predatory upsells. I’ve had to go back to the counter after someone took advantage of my father’s hearing issues to give him upcharges on fuel and insurance.

The KA+ and the Fabia had nothing about them, but the Corsa, a 1.4 litre petrol, granted doesn’t sound much, but boy did it want to go for what it was.

You likely would of hated it, but get it out of town on a twisty road, I think it would of put a little smile on your face.

I don’t mind a low power car if the driving dynamics are good. Honda Fit is still a decent autoX car and I’ve take a 595 Abarth up some of the B-roads in Scotland and it was great. The fastest car in the world is a rental car!

I think Hertz might have had a few some time ago, but not these days, and I am sure not for reasonable money.

Unfortunately, a big part of renting a cool car at a non-insane price is doing it outside the country.  I’ve always had decent experiences in Germany, that Jag being the most exotic.
